The Mount Batur (or Indonesian: Gunung Batur ) is an active volcano on Bali. Although it is 1717 meters high, you can climb the volcano perfectly. Leave deep in the night and walk on firmly. On top of Mount Batur the view during the sunrise is breathtaking.
Before you climb the volcano
Of course you can climb the Mount Batur any time of the day. Yet most tourists choose to do that at night. Not only because of the beautiful sunrise, also because it is a lot cooler. Do not worry: you will start to sweat a lot at night. (Except if you are a top athlete.)
Everywhere on the island you can book special tours, which are often called ‘Sunrise Trekking’. You pay about 350,000 rupiah per person for that. Together with a guide you will walk a winding and bumpy path that leads to the top of the volcano. On top of the Batur you enjoy a breakfast with a beautiful view.
You can expect this from the climb
Prepare yourself for a brisk walk that takes about two hours. Wake up quietly is not there, because the local guides have the speed in it. Armed with a flashlight you start the journey in a wooded area. The path here is not so steep, but the stones and thick roots let you stumble easily. The flashlight is therefore not a luxury.
Since the path is rather narrow – and so you mainly follow each other – you can not pause without bothering other adventurers. Fortunately there are several places on the way where you can take a break. Or catch up with a slow group of tourists.bout halfway through the climb we are put in the block by our guide. We can continue in two ways. Via a steep route to the top of the volcano or a slightly less steep route to the just-not-top of the volcano. Although we already feel the climb in the legs, we decide not to compromise.
The path to the top is becoming steeper and rockier. And as the climb progresses, the temperature drops. Occasionally a piece of stone slides under your feet and you have to use your hands to keep the balance.
On top of Mount Batur
Did we mention that the view is great? You look out on Mount Agung, the other volcano on Bali. In clear weather you also have a beautiful view over the lake of Batur and two craters. After the climb you probably got hungry. The breakfast is simple, but the location makes up for it. Most guides cook an egg for you, using the hot steam coming from the volcano.
A small walk takes you to the craters, where the ground is literally warm under your feet. In some places, the steam of the active volcano comes up out of the ground. If you walk down a lot, you come to a large open area where it suffocates from the monkeys. They are clearly used to all tourists. So look if you want to eat the banana from your breakfast package. Chances are that one of the monkeys will grab the piece of fruit from your hands. Many tourists carry the monkeys, who make good use of it.
Eventually you will have to go down again. That walk is a lot less heavy, although you feel him more in your calves. You take another route back, where you also take about 2 hours. Along the way you will pass by locals who sell bottles of water and fruit. For Balinese terms you pay the main price, but converted to euros that is still very bad.
