Diving and Thailand are inextricably linked. There are beautiful dive sites throughout the country, but the island of Koh Tao is really the place to be when it comes to diving in Thailand.
The diving season runs from February to October and during this period the conditions are very good. One of the reasons why so many people go to Koh Tao is the fact that it is relatively cheap to get your diving license here, also known as PADI. We too chose this dive paradise and are happy to share our experiences and tips with you.
The choice is giant; which diving school do I choose ?!
As soon as you board the boat towards Koh Tao it is clear; you can hardly go there without diving. Several diving schools start to promote their own school on the boat. And this is not surprising, because as soon as you reach the pier of the island, the craziness only increases. There are about 70 (!) Diving schools on Koh Tao. Here are some tips for choosing a suitable diving school:
- Language: do the instructors speak English well and perhaps even Dutch? This will help you tremendously during both the theory explanation and the preparation for diving itself. Instructors at our dive school worked English, German, French and even Dutch.
- Group size: Koh Tao is known for mass tourism for diving. It can also happen that you dive in a group of 6 or 8 people. The choice is yours, depending on how confident you feel underwater. We chose a diving school that uses smaller groups. We were even a couple of days, so we got a real private lesson.
- PADI course: the different diving schools sometimes use a slightly different diving program. For us it was possible to achieve our PADI Open Water within 3 days.
- Accommodation: there are diving schools where you can book both your course and accommodation. The accommodation is then included in the price of your package.
Based on the above points and of course the price, we ultimately chose Impian Divers . Partly because this dive school has a Dutch owner, the contact was very easy from the beginning. The instructors were very patient and helped us tremendously during the dive. We felt safe from the first moment and were able to ask questions where necessary.
