Cambodia is still virtually undiscovered by travelers and has a long coast and many islands. In the south of Cambodia there are even more than 60 small uninhabited islands. The names of the islands start with “Koh” which stands for island. On some beaches you can stay in a guesthouse for a few dollars. Look no further, because below you will find the most beautiful places!
1. Koh Tonsay
The island of Koh Tonsay is about two square kilometers and has a number of beautiful white sandy beaches. From Kep I sail in half an hour. It is not inhabited, there live a number of families who live off the fishing and coconuts sales. Nest yourself in a hammock and enjoy the carefree life. You can spend the night in one of the huts on the beach for about 15 dollars. Make sure you have a flashlight next to your bed, because there is no electricity at night. A great opportunity to view the thousands of stars or to join a crackling beach fire!
2. Koh Rong
Koh Rong is the largest island in Cambodia, but in spite of that there are only a few fishing villages and a few cheap and simple accommodations. The boat trip from the large coastal town of Sihanoukvilletakes 2.5 hours, but this is definitely worth it. Walk with your bare feet over the white beaches, go kayak adventure, spearfishing with the locals or just inland. Here you will find a pristine jungle with hidden waterfalls where you can go on a discovery trip. Beaches that you should not miss are Southwestern Beach and Long Beach. Buy a local Klang beer at the end of the day and sit back at the bar. You will probably see the lights of Shanoukville on a clear evening. Do not forget to bring an anti-mosquito spray, because you definitely need it. Here, too, the power goes off around 11 o’clock in the evening, and the water an hour later.
3. Koh Rong Sanloem
Rest seekers will love this island. The many bays, beautiful beaches and turquoise water make this a true paradise. The same ferries sailing to Koh Rong also stop at Koh Rong Sanloem. Most people can be found on Lazy Beach, but recently a number of new accommodations have been built on the other side of the island (Saracen Beach). On the island there is little to do, but that makes it ideal for relaxing, snorkeling or reading a book.
4. Koh Tang
Do you want to go diving? Then Koh Tang is the right place. Near the island are two shipwrecks and most of the coral is still untouched. It is not easy to reach, because it is definitely 5 hours sailing from the mainland before you get there. Once you are there, you will be rewarded with a diversity of corals, reefs and seahorses, octopuses, colored slugs and stingrays. There are eight dive sites in the area, enough for everyone. Koh Tang is uninhabited and is a beautiful island, but because of its remote location few tourists go there. You can book the diving trip with overnight accommodation in the dive shops in Sihanoukville.
5. Koh Totang
Almost all islands and stalls of Cambodia have the ideal picture; beautiful white beaches, clear sea and palm trees. Yet Koh Totang is something special. On this almost uninhabited island there is only one guesthouse, called Nomads Land. There is also a restaurant with local and international dishes, you will not be short of anything here. The guesthouse uses solar panels and storage of rainwater. Right next to it is a small garden with mango and cashew nut trees, some chickens are also roaming around. Totally back to basic and nice and secluded from the busy life. There are plenty of activities such as snorkeling, kayaking, a boat trip around the archipelago or a workshop of spearfishing. From Sihanoukvile or Phnom Penh you can get there by taking a taxi to the town of Poi Yopon.
