If you make a tour through Cambodia , chances are that you will end up in Siem Reap at a certain point in time. This small town is the gateway to the most important sanctuary of the country: the temples of Angkor. Only here you could walk around for days, but do not forget to look around Siem Reap yourself, because there is plenty to do.
1. Angkor wat
The main reason for a visit to Siem Reap is of course the nearby temple complex of Angkor , where you can wander for days between overgrown temples and ancient sanctuaries. The complex was the center of the Khmer Empire from the ninth to the fifteenth century, but was taken over by nature in the centuries that followed. In 1900 the complex was rediscovered by French colonists, and since 1992 it has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Meanwhile, the temple city is the big crowd puller of Cambodia, and you can not leave the country without having a look here. The most famous temple is Angkor Wat, but also Angkor Thom, the Bayon Temple and Ta Phrom are worth a visit.
